The different ballast spearfishing accessories

Weight belts

Belts

This is the most common ballast system. For weight belts, there are 2 types of buckle: plastic buckles (less wear-resistant and with a tendency to open by themselves over time) and metal buckles (more resistant). After that, there are different types of belt, and quality depends mainly on the materials used. You've got several choices:  ~- rubber belts: the main advantage of these belts is the fact that the weights hardly move, as they adhere easily to the material. However, it will be more fragile than a nylon belt.  ~- polypropylene belts (nylon): very durable, these belts resist wear over time. ~- Marseillaise belts: these are classic belts with traditional belt buckles. They are designed mainly for intermediate hunters as they are more difficult to release.

Ankle weights

These generally compliment other types of ballast. Ankle weights help balance you in the water by keeping your feet down. They do not usually weight more than 500g and have the advantage of distributing the weight over your entire body. This type of weight is especially useful if you hunt in shallow waters, between 0 and 5m.

Harnesses

There are several types of harnesses for spearfishing: those with straps and those that are flexible with pockets. This ballast system provides more comfort during your sessions as it distributes the weight over the upper body, especially at the shoulders and back. It also keeps you from feeling pain around your hips and lower back and makes immersion easier. But take note! Harnesses do not replace weight belts, they offload for optimal weight dispersal of your ballast.
