CARLA, SUBEA PRODUCT ENGINEER

She's keen on scuba diving. Learn more about her …

I’m 33 years old. Being of Flemish origin, I began diving 8 years ago with my club in Belgium: everything from training in the pool to quarry diving. Later on I was able to travel, particularly on diving trips, and I haven't stopped since then. I've become a real diving enthusiast and I try togo diving whenever I can. In fact, I don't let a year go by without organising a trip that includes diving. Now I have my PADI Divemaster certification.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT SUBEA ?

What's your background ?

I became a product engineer for plastic parts for Subea in July 2015, more specifically, for masks and snorkels. A product engineer looks after a product from A to Z, from the idea to the customer and including its design. During the project, everyone one has convictions, and ideas that we the put to the test. There's a whole prototyping phase for which we use 3D printers on the Hendaye site, before settling on the design. After that, we create the final 3D model, we make the moulds and do the product initial injections. And then we do repeated tests to see if any changes are needed in terms of feasibility or certification... After a whole series of technical and usage tests, the product can be found in the store. Then we monitor customer reviews and feedback to see if we can further improve the product.

WHAT'S YOUR MOST BEAUTIFUL MEMORY OF AN UNDERWATER EXPERIENCE ?

I have so many great diving memories... But if I had to pick one, it would be from a dive cruise to the Similan Islands of Thailand, when a manta ray circled our dive group for at least 20 minutes. It was incredible to see it coming and going while always sticking close to us.
