ADAM, SUBEA SPEARFISHING PRODUCT MANAGER

I'm from Hungary, started to work at Decathlon since 2007, and joined Subea by the end of 2017. I do practise diving mainly in Croatia. I started snorkeling with very limited know-how and equipment, after trying to go deeper and deeper i discovered freediving, and after all spearfishing. My first orientation for diving was my childhood vacation snorkelings and as for many of you is the movie The Big Blue which i saw when i was 10 years old. I discovered all the croatian seaside and finally decided to "settle my base" on the island of Murter-Dalmatia where you can easily access to the beautiful archipelago and discover new places every day.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT SUBEA ?

What's your background ?

I'm the spearfishing product manager. The target of the job is to indentify the need of the users, and make sure to create the right products together with the conception team like designers, engineers, production team. I believe that we also have an important role to explain right the spirit of spearfishing sport with our products, communication but also education.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT SPEARFISHING ?

Spearfishing for me is an activity with a lot of heritage (it exist even before humans), its a hunting method where you have to discover and understand the abyss with a lot of respect to your prey and your physical abilities at the same time. Finally, as a spearfisher you catch just as many fish as you and your family and friends will take for lunch or dinner which makes spearfishing far the most selective and sea-protective way of fishing - no bycatch, no seafloor damage. We all hunters in Subea team believe, we are able to change the image of the spearfishing into a positive way with our safe and more protective products.

WHAT'S YOUR MOST BEAUTIFUL MEMORY OF AN UNDERWATER EXPERIENCE ?

Once i was spearfishing for long time but not succeed. Finally i gave up to have fish for dinner, so i decided just to enjoy some underwater discovery dive for the spot. At a certain and calm dive i turned slowly to right and i've seen a huge Zubatac coming towards me. Normally the biggest issue for a spearfisher is how to get close to fishes, especially big ones because they are very cautious. Even with my gun in my hand i decided not to shoot because it was such a fantastic experience to see that big fish coming slowly towards me, looking at me. Normally most of the fishes immediately would have run away. The luck of spearfishers are not the same every day sometimes we get from the sea, sometimes we dont. To accept this makes me a happy spearfisher all the time.
