LENGTH LIMIT REGULATIONS, LEGAL AND BIOLOGICAL LENGTH LIMITS

In 2011, the FNPSA (French Freedive Sports Fishing Federation) decided to adopt a resolution in order to apply so-called biological length limits for spearfishing, in an effort to respect the marine environment. As such, it indicates: "The biological length limit" expresses the size at which 100% of fish, crustaceans or shellfish belonging to a given species and for a given location have participated in at least one complete reproduction cycle. For each species potentially exposed to fishing, this "biological length limit" constitutes the minimum catch size recommended by the FNPSA for sports fishing while freediving. This "organic length limit" is expressed in cm. It in no way replaces the mandatory thresholds established by general or local regulations that impose minimum and potentially smaller sizes. It is simply an indicator of good sense that will allow everyone to enjoy "eco-responsible" sports fishing while freediving, in other words predation that respects biodiversity and marine habitats. Its observance by all parties, together with a limited number of catches, contributes to responsible and lasting management of fish, crustaceans and shellfish resources."

MARKING OF SPECIES

Warning, the order of 17 May 2011 requires the marking of certain species taken during recreational fishing at sea. This marking involves removing the lower part of the tail fin. The specimens of species caught by people fishing from boats or by spearfishing from a boat are marked upon being brought on board, except for species that are kept alive on board before being released. In all cases, marking must be performed before debarkation. For people engaged in spearfishing from shore, this marking must be performed immediately upon returning to shore. For people fishing with a rod from shore, this marking must be performed immediately upon capture. Apart from the marking operation, the species caught must be kept whole until their debarkation, while the marking must not prevent the measurement of the length of the fish.
