HOW TO LOAD YOUR SPEARFISHING SPEARGUN

Are you a beginner spearfisher? Find out how to load your speargun properly!

Loading a speargun can often be a bit tricky when you are a spearfishing beginner. So it's essential for your safety to learn how to handle and load your accessory correctly!

OUR TIPS ON HOW TO LOAD YOUR SPEARFISHING SPEARGUN

A FEW REMINDERS BEFORE YOU LOAD YOUR WEAPON

First, remember that you must never load your speargun out of the water! There must be nobody in front of you, and you must always point your speargun at the seabed when loading. Also, wear gloves to protect your hands when loading. Here are the steps to load your speargun:
- Make sure there are no knots in the spear rig before starting.
- Position your spear in the guide and make sure that it clicks into place properly. You will hear a click, and you can always pull gently on the spear to check that it is firmly locked in place.
- Activate the speargun’s safety device, and remember to release it before starting your spearfishing session.
- Position the line properly before tightening the bands, so that they don’t get in your way when loading. Note that some spearguns have fins on the side to secure this line.
- Press the loading butt of the grip against your sternum. The higher you position it, the more force you will have. Most spearfishing wetsuits have a reinforced section in this area to make this operation more comfortable. If you use a large speargun, you can also position it on your hip.
- Once the speargun is in position, pull on the bands simultaneously with both hands until the wishbone hooks onto the fin or the notch on the spear. This depends on the type of shaft you use.
- It is easier to reach the second notch by loading in two steps and hooking the band in the intermediate notch first.

Now you know the safety basics, you are ready to start practising!
