8 ECO-FRIENDLY WAYS TO HELP PROTECT THE OCEANS

Pollution, dwindling fish populations, destruction of coral reefs... Let's act to preserve our oceans !

According to the United Nations, 40% of our planet’s oceans are “strongly impacted by human activity”. And yet, the ocean is an essential part of our environment : thanks to its biodiversity, (also an important source of food and nutrients), our oceans absorb approximately 25% of the Earth’s CO2 emissions each year. To celebrate World Oceans Day, held on 8 June around the topic “Clean our ocean“, SUBEA has come up with 8 simple eco-friendly actions that you can perform during your dives and on land - so we can all come together before it’s too late !

PICK UP ANY WASTE

Both in the water and on the beach !

Collecting the waste that you come across during your water activities isn’t difficult - it’s just a question of habit ! Always bring along a net bag when snorkeling or scuba diving, or a garbage bag when walking along the beach. If you do come across some rubbish, do something about it instead of being outraged : pick it up ! This small gesture is the best way to ensure that you won’t come across this waste again in the marine environment.

LOOK WITH YOUR EYES, NOT WITH YOUR HANDS !

Respect the environment around you...

During your dive training, you were probably taught a simple rule when it comes to respecting marine life : never disturb marine animals. Don’t follow them to get the perfect picture, don’t encourage them to come out of their hiding places, and don’t touch or mistreat them. By all means, look at the coral in the water as much as you want, but never take any away as a souvenir of your trip ! Also, take care not to damage the seabed : avoid animals that may be attached to rocks or the coral, and be careful with your fin kicks. Your visit should be as discreet as your bubbles…

LIMIT YOUR USE OF PLASTIC

Think ahead to protect the ocean

Specialists estimate that there are some 300,000 million tonnes of plastic in the oceans. As such, why not take steps to change your consumption habits right now, by reducing plastic at the source and replacing it with recyclable or sustainable elements ? This simple action enables everyone to contribute to protecting the ocean. Here are a few ecological solutions that are easy to implement:
– use a fabric bag when doing your shopping,
– limit your purchases of products with plastic packaging, even extra layers of packaging,
– buy in bulk,
– avoid buying plastic bottles that can’t be reused, or products packaged in individual portions.

LOOK WHAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR PLATE !

Be vigilant when it comes to buying seafood

Do you regularly eat seafood ? Check that it comes from reliable sources, and from sustainable fishing. Over-fishing, irresponsible fishing and accidental fishing have contributed strongly to the decline of fish populations across the world. Also, avoid consuming certain species, such as bluefin tuna, that are now very sought-after and facing extinction. And forget about shark fin soup, estimated to be responsible for the death of 100 million sharks each year.

PARTICIPATE AND GET INVOLVED FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Be active !

There are several ways for you to get active and protect the environment. Of course, we should all start off by changing up our daily habits. But why not consider going further, for example by volunteering for the collective clean-up efforts on beaches and reefs ? If you don’t live on the coast, signing petitions and making donations to foundations that support the protection of marine ecosystems is another great way of getting involved.

BE AN EXEMPLE

Tell a friend !

Your attitude is important - but when it comes to ecology and protecting the oceans, it’s important to walk the walk as well as to talk the talk. As well as your friends, family and colleagues, children will be more than happy to help. Nothing is more important than instilling values of respect for the sea in future generations. Use social media wisely, and you’ll help to encourage people who are acting to preserve the marine environment.

REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

A long-term eco-friendly gesture in support of ecology...

A carbon footprint of 0 is impossible these days. However, we should all be working to reduce the size of our carbon footprint to help counteract the effects of climate change on the oceans. Rising levels of seawater and acidification of the oceans are closely linked to greenhouse gas emissions. Have you thought about reducing your energy consumption ? How about getting around on foot, by bicycle, or in an eco-friendly vehicle ? Or, when doing your shopping, you could opt for local products that don’t have to be transported by lorry over thousands of kilometres. Even the smallest daily habit will help to change the future of our oceans.

CHECK WHAT YOU ARE BUYING !

Identifying products that risk endangering species...

Finally, it’s important to pay closer attention to the products that you purchase, especially luxury products. Some of them are made from marine species that are on the road to disappearance, such as coral, tortoiseshell or pearly nautilus, for example.
